You would think that if a salon opens its doors during the holidays with no ribbon-cutting opening party or even a Web site yet up, not a creature would be stirring. Not so for LA's brand new Mèche salon, which was opened last week by colorist Tracey Cunningham and stylist Neil Weisberg.
"I walked in the first day we were open and it was so full it was like we'd been open for five years," says Cunningham, who is the creative color consultant for Redken and whose long client list is littered with names like Drew Barrymore, Kate Bosworth, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, and Emma Stone. Most recently, both she and Weisberg (formerly of Neil George salon) just finished Diane Kruger's hair for her upcoming Chanel ad.
"I love being part of this community—20 more seconds!—people are so happy for us," says Cunningham over the phone while orchestrating color—she often commands six chairs at once. "It's like we didn’t have to wait for our funerals to find out how much people support us, we feel so loved."
Mèche (which means "highlight" or "lock of hair" in French) offers nail services and makeup application on its yet-to-be finished menu along with hair services. Partial highlights with Cunningham start at $375 and cuts with Weisberg start at $275. While you'll be hard-pressed to get in with those two, as they aren’t taking new clients for the foreseeable future, their staff of 20 stylists handpicked from around LA likely represent some of the city’s best talent.
About the big hair trends right now, Cunningham says: "I've never seen women go so bright with their color in the winter, which is refreshing. I just made Rosie Huntington superblonde. And lots of Jennifer Behr headbands. Maybe the headbands are because of the end of Gossip Girl."
